A diary blog, covering details of the initial planning for our Round The World motorcycle trip in 2008...
After the disappointment at hearing that Tracy's degree course had been extended, we've worked it through with the college and have re-set our departure date. It's a pity to have to do this as we both liked the tenuous link between our original date and the Long Way Round that inspired us in the first place, but hey-ho...
So, our new departure date is (drum roll, please)... Sunday 29th June 2008...
At least it gives us a further 8 weeks to save some more money (by working, sadly!), and some additional time to prepare ourselves. Unfortunately, it also means changing the European leg of our journey fairly extensively as we still need to leave Turkey for India in early August or we'll get so far behind in the Far East, Australia and NZ that we'll be travelling in bad weather the whole journey... So now we have just 5 weeks at the start to get from home to Turkey and prepare for the flight to India....
Other news... we've registered the website domain : JustOneMoreMile.com. It's amazing how difficult a decision that was, and it's been bubbling around for over a year now, with that name our front-runner all this time. I personally like it because it has 2 different interpretations depending on your current mood.... I like to think it means "Just one more mile, please" not "oh, god, not..."... only time will tell!!
Ok, that's it for now... if anyone is actually reading this diatribe, drop me a comment so I know!!
Well, today has been "one of those days". Tracy has just found out they've extended her degree course (it's part of her job too!) until July 2008, when we're all set to depart on 4th May 2008... So now we've got some thinking to do... do we delay the trip (and have to replan it all and probably miss out some countries we really want to visit), or does she look for another job (and what chance of finding one, when she's only going to be there for a year?)...or does she stay where she is, and leave before the course finishes (and so not get her 3rd degree)?... problems, problems...
As for my day, well it wasn't too bad. Seems that word of my trip is still spreading around work (I thought everyone knew already!). I had someone else come up to me today asking about my plans... which is encouraging, so need to get the website sorted in the next couple of months...
... and I've found someone to help with the development of the logo, so that's at least some progress towards the trip!
...and I became a grandpa for the 4th time today, when my youngest daughther, Danielle, gave birth to a son, Alfie (not over-keen on the name, though!). Hopefully they'll all stop now for a while, as having 4 grandchildren at my age is hardly what I had in my life-plan!
Tomorrow's the start of the weekend, and with a bit of luck, I'll find some time to start putting together some draft web pages.... and get the maps out!!
Well, I've finally decided to bite the bullet and join the world of blogging. It's not that I have much to say, more that I want to start getting used to recording my thoughts and capturing some of my experiences ready for when I start doing something interesting with my life...
Which isn't that far off... really... don't beleive me? Ok, let me explain...
In August this year, Tracy and I are heading off on our current motorcycles - mine's a 2002 BMW R1150GS and hers is a 2002 Ducati Monster M620 (lowered suspension) - on a trip round Eastern Europe. During this we'll be taking in the MotoGP race at BRNO on 19th August and then heading through Slovakia and Poland before returning home to the UK via Germany, Belgium and France...
But that's only the start, the big trip starts next May, when we'll be setting off on 2 new motorcycles to explore the world... for 2 years... can't wait!
And so that's the reason for all this blogging lark. Start small, whilst there's nothing much to say, and gradually build up to a full-on Pepys-style diary experience. Oh, and also to work out how to put the blog directly onto my own website, where we can put much more information about the trip, and even provide some neat ways for you to join in the fun...
... but for that, you'll have to wait... I've a lot to learn before then!
Hope you stay tuned, I'd really welcome any feedback, good or bad, so feel free to drop me a comment or two!
